Dried goji berries and slices of ginger are steeped in hot water to release a mild fragrant aroma and enjoyed as a nourishing beverage. The tea can be lightly sweetened to your preference too.
Goji Berry Tea
Goji berry or known as wolfberry is an important ingredient in my mom’s pantry and so is mine (and I believe many other Asians). My mom uses goji berry for tea, soup, stir-fry veggies, or just munch them like raisins. This berry is originated from China and usually comes in dried form.
WHAT IS GOJI BERRY TEA?
They are basically made of goji berry and water. That’s it! Easy as that. There are no tea leaves involved. It is called “tea” because of the color that resembles tea in general.
HEALTH BENEFIT OF GOJI BERRY
Many Chinese who practice Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) swear by goji berry for many of its health benefits. Just to mention a few: to maintain youth, improve quality of sleep, to maintain the balance or restore of chi in our body, etc. Goji berries are known to be packed with nutrients and antioxidants. If you ask me, I won’t say it’s an elixir, because it’s not. It’s still good for you but there’s not one food that you can just eat on its own to draw benefits.
WHAT IS THIS GOJI BERRY TEA FOR?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, goji berry is considered a “neutral” ingredient. They are neither “heaty” nor “cool” for the body. They are perfect for overall health and daily consumption.
WHERE CAN I GET GOJI BERRY?
They are available at the health food store or any Medicine hall in Asia. You can also get them from Amazon. I got mine from Costco (not sponsored). They are organic and unsulphured and I don’t need to wash them anymore as they are ready to be consumed
CAN I DRINK THIS AS PART OF CONFINEMENT DIET?
My mom would suggest adding red dates or black dates to the tea to make it more “heaty”. So, it’s perfect for woman who has just given birth and need to restore her energy and for healing.
You don’t need a teapot to make this tea though. It does make it easier to pour hot boiling water for photography purpose 🙂

Easy Nourishing Goji Berry Ginger Tea
Ingredients
- 30 gr goji berry 1/4 cup
- 3 cups hot water
Optional:
- 1 inch ginger thinly sliced for maximum flavor
- 20 gr rock sugar 1/4 cup
Instructions
- Good quality goji berry is easy to spot. It's large and has a brightred color. Wash the goji berries in cold water a few times. Drain off water. I use organic goji berries that have been prewashed. Bring 3 cups of water to a rolling boil. Turn off heat and remove from the stove. Add goji berries, ginger, and rock sugar. Cover with the lid and let them steep for 1 hour for maximum flavor. You can do as little as 10-15 minutes too
To serve:
- Uncover the lid and pour them into cups with the berries if you like and ready to enjoy

I buy goji berries mainly to add to savory things, so I’d been wondering how else I could use them. It’s kinda hard to get the hang of Chinese herbal ingredients, but goji berries and dates are the least intimidating ones lol. This recipe was useful and, of course, it’s a tasty, fruity tea that would please anyone.
Tell me about it! I’m totally blurred when it comes to Chinese herbs. If it’s not for my mom who brought me some whenever she visited and gave me a crash course lol (which I still don’t remember most of them!). Goji berries and red dates are definitely more common these days and easier to find too!
